A Physics-Driven Equalizer Derived from Real Circuits

From the Physicist’s Bench to Your DAW

For decades, digital equalizers have sought to recreate the sound of analog hardware. Yet something essential has often been missing: the complex interaction between electronic components that gives real circuits their depth, movement, and musical character.

Gyrator X was created to capture exactly that.

Developed by physicist, circuit designer, and producer Oliver Gretz, Gyrator X goes beyond conventional DSP techniques. It is a topology-preserving, physics-based simulation of analog circuits, modeling the behavior and interaction of individual components with exceptional accuracy. The result of years of research, measurement, and critical listening, it recreates not only the frequency response of classic analog designs, but also their dynamic behavior and musical feel.

The result is an equalizer that responds naturally, feels intuitive, and integrates seamlessly into professional mixing and mastering workflows.

“Matching the frequency curve was never enough. I wanted to recreate the responsiveness, interaction, and musicality that emerge from real analog circuits. Gyrator X is the culmination of years of research into how those circuits truly behave.”
— Dr. Oliver Gretz

Key Features

Gyrator-Based Equalizer Core

  • Low, Mid, and High bands built on true gyrator circuit topology — the same foundation shared with Sky Band elsewhere in the plugin
  • Component-level interaction, not curve-matching, so the EQ moves and behaves like analog under real-world signal
  • Frequency ranges and Q values tuned by ear for musical results
  • Transients stay intact at any setting — from subtle boosts to cuts — where other "high-end" EQs can smear or blur them

Signature Sky Band

Built to solve a problem specific to in-the-box mixing: aliasing accumulated across many coloring or saturating plugin instances can make engineers reluctant to boost highs the way they would on an analog desk — often resulting in a mix or master that ends up darker than intended. Sky Band restores that top-end openness deliberately.

  • Gyrator-based shelf design, available in two circuit voicings (each with Normal and Soft response) for different degrees of intensity
  • Gain-proportional curve shaping — the more you boost or cut, the more the curve concentrates toward the higher frequencies, so subtle moves stay smooth and broad while heavier moves stay focused and controlled
  • Purpose-built for mixing and mastering, not a generic “air” effect — designed to counteract the darker decisions aliasing can cause, not just add sheen

Uniquely Sounding Filters

High-Pass and Low-Pass filters modeled from classic analog circuit topologies — the filter type you choose changes the character of the cut, not just its slope.

  • Multiple circuit types — Multiple Feedback (MFB), Sallen-Key (SK), State Variable (SVF), and a passive high-pass design — each reacting differently to the incoming signal and frequency content
  • Genuine single-stage 4-pole State Variable filter — a true 4-pole design, not two 2-pole stages stacked, and rare even among hardware-modeled plugins
  • A proprietary Gyrator-based low-pass with a character no other filter here can produce — not available anywhere else, and repeatedly singled out by mixing engineers as a standout, “insanely good-sounding” feature

Dual ADAA Saturation Stages

Two fully independent saturation stages, modeled not from commercial hardware but from measurements of analog circuits designed and built in-house — giving each model a character that doesn't exist in any other plugin, rather than another “vintage tube” emulation.

  • Modern vacuum tube — familiar, recognizable tube warmth
  • Vintage NOS tube — measured from an original Telefunken NOS tube no longer manufactured today, resulting in a cleaner, more neutral tone than the modern vacuum tube option
  • Silicon transistor and diode stages — punch and edge
  • Germanium transistor and diode stages — prized for their distinctive character
  • JFET class-A stage — tube-like warmth with distinct punch

Freely position each stage anywhere across the full signal path — high-pass, low, mid, high, Sky Band, low-pass — for tonal shaping exactly where you need it.

Innovative Control & Professional Workflow

Both channels instantly within reach

  • Dual-channel operation (Left/Right or Mid/Side) — one knob per parameter, with two indicators showing both channels at once, so there's no view-switching and no duplicated controls to manage
  • Mouse-button assignment lets you grab either channel directly on the same knob — two selectable mouse modes map left, middle, and right clicks to control L/M or R/S independently or together
  • Clear, separate EQ curves, always visible

Designed for Professional Workflows

  • A/B state comparison
  • Undo / Redo history
  • Auto-gain compensation
  • Optional oversampling
  • Multiple UI themes and contrast modes for different working conditions

Spectrum Analysis & Visualization

  • Real-time FFT display with adjustable speed and tilt
  • Optional EQ curve overlay
  • Individual control of analyzer and EQ display range
  • Toggle analyzer and EQ displays on or off for distraction-free listening

Reviews

Mastered By DK

Probably the most organic and 'analog-sounding' digital EQ I have ever heard. ... The Mid/Side workflow and mouse modes are absolutely brilliant.

Gyrator X is a beast. The thing it does allow me to work fast and sculpt with intention and with incredible sonic quality.

My go to on the mixbus now is using tubes on the mids and JFET on the sides. This is a truly well thought out design.

A gem of a feature that people might miss is the insanely good-sounding Gyrator 18dB LPF.

The Sound of Analog Circuits. Not Just Their Curves.

Gyrator X is a physics-based equalizer that models how real analog circuits actually behave. Component interactions, circuit-dependent filters, and analog-modeled saturation work together to deliver the weight, movement, and musicality of hardware—with the precision and flexibility of a modern plugin.
